Halo's Unreal Engine 5 remake (Metacritic 82) is now free with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, PS Plus Extra lands Citizen Sleeper 2 (OpenCritic 87) alongside Dying Light, and Foretales plus Yet Another Zombie Defense HD stay free to keep through July 30.
Halo Campaign Evolved is on Game Pass today, free with Ultimate and PC Game Pass
Halo: Campaign Evolved, Halo Studios' full Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 2001 original's campaign, is now installable and playable on Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud, and handheld as of today, July 28 at 8am PT. It is included day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at no extra cost (not the Essential or Console tiers); buying it outright runs $49.99 Standard or $69.99 Premium, with cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox, Steam, and PS5 via Play Anywhere.
The critical verdict settled last week at Metacritic 82 and OpenCritic 83 (88% Top Critic): a gorgeous, faithful rebuild that's the best-feeling Halo this team has shipped, with 4-player online co-op (up from 2), three new Sgt. Johnson prequel missions, and 42 skulls. The honest knock is the package is thin, campaign only, no PvP or Firefight, and a few reviewers flagged PC and PS5 performance dips. If you already pay for Ultimate or PC Game Pass, this is the marquee free play of the day; if not, the $50 ask buys one campaign where the Master Chief Collection often costs less for far more.
PS Plus Extra: Citizen Sleeper 2 (OpenCritic 87) leads today's final July wave
Sony's final July catalog drop is live now for PS Plus Extra and Premium in the US, UK, and Japan (it landed everywhere else back on July 21), confirmed by Push Square this morning. Four games, kept as long as your subscription is active:
- Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector (PS5) is the headliner, a tabletop-inspired narrative RPG where dice rolls drive your contracts and survival as an escaped synthetic. OpenCritic 87, Metacritic 85, both Generally Favorable, and the standout quality pick of the wave. If you like the original or narrative RPGs generally, claim this first.
- Dying Light (PS4) is Techland's 2015 zombie parkour survival game, OpenCritic 74, supporting 1-4 player online co-op. Still one of the better co-op zombie games on the service even a decade on.
- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind (PS5, PS4), OpenCritic 71, a retro 2D beat-em-up from Digital Eclipse with up to 6-player local and online play. Nostalgia fare, decent not great.
- Snow Bros. Wonderland (PS5), no critic aggregate, a 3D isometric revival of the 1990 Snow Bros arcade game with 1-4 player local co-op. The thinnest of the four on reviews, so temper expectations.
These are catalog additions, not time-limited claims, so there is no end date to race, but the August PS Plus Essential trio gets revealed tomorrow, July 29, and lands August 4.
Still free to keep this week
A short status sweep of the live free-to-keep and free-to-play windows, every end date checked:
- Foretales on the Epic Games Store is free to keep through Thursday, July 30 at 8am PT. It is a $19.99 narrative card game, Metacritic 74 (Mixed), Steam Very Positive 86%, never given away before this run. Two days left.
- Yet Another Zombie Defense HD on Steam is free to keep through Thursday, July 30 at 10am PT (5pm UTC). A $3.99 top-down co-op zombie shooter, Steam Very Positive 82%, up to 4 players. The giveaway teases the sequel Yet Another Zombie Survivors hitting 1.0 on August 20. Two days left.
- The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, Lost Explorers' Swords Pack on Steam is a $4.99 cosmetic DLC free to keep through Wednesday, July 29 at 10am PT, but it requires the $29.99 base game (currently 20% off at $23.99). Free-with-purchase flavor, not a standalone gift. Ends tomorrow.
- For Honor is free for all Xbox members with no Game Pass required through Tuesday, August 4, per the official Xbox Wire Free Play Days post. Metacritic 78, Ubisoft's directional melee fighter. The longest-running free window still open.
The big Steam six-game free weekend (Metal Gear Solid, Icarus, Killing Floor 3, and company) and the Train Fest both closed yesterday, July 27, so do not expect those to still be live.
Forward: Zenless Zone Zero hits PC Game Pass tomorrow, July 30 is the next convergence
- Wednesday, July 29: Zenless Zone Zero's Version 3.1 update lands and the game joins PC Game Pass across all tiers (Ultimate, Premium, Essential, PC). It is free-to-play regardless, but the 2nd anniversary gives every player a free limited S-Rank agent of their choice plus 1,600 Polychromes and 20 Signal Searches. The Mound DLC free-to-keep window also closes July 29 at 10am PT, and the August PS Plus Essential reveal is expected the same day.
- Thursday, July 30 is the densest day left in July: Mistfall Hunter, a dark-fantasy extraction ARPG, launches day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC. Prime Gaming drops its final July batch, Zoria: Age of Shattering and Weakless, both on GOG, yours to keep. Foretales and Yet Another Zombie Defense HD both end their free-to-keep windows. And Epic swaps in its next free pair, OTXO ($14.99, a top-down action roguelite) and Sol Cesto ($13.99, a tactical roguelite), free July 30 through August 6.
- Friday, July 31: Corsair Cove, a pirate city-builder, joins PC Game Pass. Eight games leave Game Pass the same day, each at least 20% off until they go, including Celeste (Metacritic 92), Crusader Kings 3, Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord, Rain World, Sniper Elite Resistance, Back to the Dawn, My Friendly Neighborhood, and Whiskerwood. If any of those are on your list, buy or finish them now.
- Monday, August 4: Heretic and Hexen (the classic 90s FPS pair) and Beast of Reincarnation (Game Freak's day-one post-apocalyptic action RPG) join Game Pass, For Honor's free Xbox window ends, and the Steam Cyberpunk Fest opens August 3.
- The PS Plus Essential trio (Modern Warfare III, For the King II, CrossCode) stays claimable through Monday, August 3.
That’s the reading for this issue.
